There is a message circulating on social media posted by one Yara @ Sedii_k claiming that “of the 600 University of Botswana students who tested for HIV, 400 tested HIV positive”. This information is a fabrication and far from the truth. The fact of the matter is that during our latest HIV test campaign carried out between January to April 2018, of the 1245 students who tested for HIV, only two students tested positive for the virus. As an institution which values excellence, our goal is not just academic success, but we also strive to ensure that our students lead healthy, happy and fulfilling life-styles. To achieve this, the University provides state-of-the-art facilities, such as a modern medical clinic, health and wellness unit, counselling centre, world class sporting facilities and student residences. These ensure provision of some of the very best services in the country for our students, including regular testing for HIV, diabetes, heart diseases and other lifestyle-related ailments. Other services include health education by peers, provision of free condoms and counselling.
