Unemployed teachers marching to the Ministry of Basic Education in Gaborone
A group of unemployed teacher graduates that marched to the Ministry of Basic Education in Gaborone on Friday to hand over a petition has given Minister Bagalatia Arone 20 days to have responded to their demands. They demand among others that: the ministry close two colleges, one that trains primary teachers and another that trains secondary teachers and convert such into two secondary schools. This is to curb piling up of graduates even when there is no absorption into the employee roll. They also demand that: minor subjects be recognised and considered as a basis for employment; that officers in the ministry be reshuffled on a regular basis to avert corruption which is high is due to recruitment officers holding office in the same region for long; that the ministry investigates sexual misconduct, bribery, recruitment process across all regions. Additionally they demand the teacher intern programme be discarded and that temporary employment be used for emergency relief not as a way to cover vacant post.
