Botswana’s foreign minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has been nominated as SADC candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission. This decision was taken during a meeting attended by 10 foreign ministers of SADC member states, held Wednesday in the capital of Botswana. Moitoi has already signaled that she will not be standing for re-election in 2019 and if she wins the continental bid, she will be replacing South Africa’s Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The ten ministers received the mandate of the Council of Ministers of SADC, held earlier this month, for selecting the candidate of the Southern Region for the post of Chairperson of the AU Commission. The newly indicated candidate, who should compete for the post of chairperson of the AU Commission with the other regional groups of Africa, was chosen after the evaluation process determined her to be the best that meets requirements, taking into account the established criteria. The ten ministers have also given mandate to the Republic of Botswana to, with the support of the Diplomatic Missions of SADC accredited in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and the SADC Secretariat to formulate a strategy and develop an effective campaign in support of the candidate of Southern Africa.…
