Residents of the North East have been warned against visiting the neighbouring Zimbabwe until its political and economic transition is complete. North East District Council (NEDC) chairperson Flora Mpetsane made the warning on Thursday when officially closing the last 2017 full council session at Masunga. The Zimbabwe Defense Force (ZDF) recently forced longtime ruler Robert Mugabe out of power and handed it to his deposed deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa who has since been inaugurated as new President. In a notice to citizens a fortnight ago, the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation pleaded with Batswana not to visit Zimbabwe in the wake of the on goings of political transition until further notice. Mpetsane, who is also the councilor for the border village of Matsiloje, reminded the residents in her area to adhere to the notice issued by the Ministry. “Our district (of North East) borders with Zimbabwe. They (Zimbabweans) are not only neighbours but also relatives to our community members in the northeastern part of the country hence frequent border crossings,” said Mpetsane.
