In the wee hours of a cold mid-winter Wednesday morning the state of the Republic of Botswana hanged Patrick Gaabakanye (65) by the neck until he was dead after the courts had booked him a date with the hangman. A statement from Government spokesperson Dr. Jeff Ramsay said Patrick Gabaakanye, 65 years, of Marulamantsi ward in Serowe, was officially executed early Wednesday morning at Gaborone Central Prison following a conviction for murder imposed by the High Court of Botswana on 13th March 2014. Gabaakanye was convicted for the murder of a 75 year old man at Gamosusu land in Metsimotlhabe village in Kweneng District on 26th May 2010. His appeal against conviction and sentence was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 30 July 2015. His previous convictions include two offences of robbery and murder. He killed a security guard using a hand gun during robbery. He was sentenced to 10 and 15 years imprisonment respectively for both offences.
