Though ICT seems to be underutilised in Botswana, government is convinced it has made huge strides in the sector judging investments in infrastructure, information systems and human capacity. Delivering a keynote address at the World Telecommunications Indicators Symposium 2016 (WTIS) on Monday, coordinator of the e-gov within the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Dr Omponye Kereteletswe said government is alive to the fact that the country still has a long way to go to attain its rightful status as an information society. Though the government has introduced policies such as Maitlamo Policy in a bid to spur utilisation of the ICT, it remains relatively under used. “However, significant inroads are being made to fully exploit ICTs in financial services, health, tourism, social and government services,” Kereteletswe said. Successful economies are said to be leveraging ICT’s on all sectors for development hence Kereteletswe said as a result investment in ICTs is considered as an important dimension in Botswana’s economic development.
