BEC worried about malpractice

The reoccurrence of malpractice continues to be a cause for concern for officials at Botswana Examinations Council (BEC). BEC Chief Executive Officer Professor Brian Mokopakgosi said this year they have recorded three cases of malpractice at Junior Certificate level and two at Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education level. According to statistics, there has been an increase of such cases at BGCSE from zero in 2015 while at JCE there was a drop from last year’s five. When addressing the media in Gaborone on Thursday Professor Mokopakgosi said though the number may be low, they want to deal away totally with the incidents. “Usually the intended act of malpractice is to the advantage of some students and it is not allowed,” he said. The CEO, however, declined to reveal the centres where the cases have been recorded; saying investigations are currently on-going. “The cases are under investigation and once proven appropriate action will be taken,” he added. Mokopakgosi said they are working hard to eliminate malpractice from the examinations completely so that people can start trusting them.
