Regional teachers’ body charged up
President of the Association of Non-Aligned Teachers Unions of Southern Africa (ANTUSA), Malose Kutumela says the association is looking to develop the teaching profession in the region. ANTUSA is a regional umbrella for teachers unions which the local union, Botswana Sector of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) is part of. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Kutumela – the president of Professional Educators Union (PEU) in South Africa – said they would like to collaborate on many issues affecting teachers in SADC and go beyond just doing research. Kutumela was addressing the media after the board of the regional associations met in Gaborone. Since its formation in 2007, the association has been mainly focusing on sports activities and gala dinners, but it now seeks to depart from the norm and move into other areas. Kutumela said all the parties to ANTUSA have young teachers amongst them, most of whom do not know what is happening in other countries. This, he said, would result in members learning from their counterparts on many areas such as gender issues.
